I assume you are mainly interested in the desktop version of MapPoint? (and this site is more interested in online mapping, hence the review skews that way).
The book continues to be a good book for MapPoint programmers if they are interested in using it from the .NET environment (especially C#). Yes the latest versions of MapPoint have a different visual look, and MapPoint 2010 has some new API features, but it is backwards compatible. This book should be useful - be aware that there are a few extra features, and things like the object version number will be different.

The only other MapPoint book is a "MapPoint for Dummies". This is based on MapPoint 2002 and is a good overview of MapPoint for non-programmers. With the addition of new features, it is no longer as comprehensive as it once was, and the different visual look will confuse complete beginners.

Also have a look at Eric Frost's http://www.mp2kmag.com and http://www.mapforums.com
(yes I post / write articles on these sites) - Richard Marsden

Thank you Richard for this excellent review. I was tempted to purchase this book on ebay but I needed to know how relative it was to the current versions of MapPoint. Could you suggest other books for programming MapPoint? - John McInnis
